New Music from Mount Eerie

After the tour behind his album Wind's Poem, which is what he deemed was the "loudest album (he's) ever made", Phil Elverum returned to Anacortes, Washington to start working on new music. About two years later, he emerged from a church-turned-recording studio called "the Unknown" with not one new album, but two. May 2012 saw the release of Clear Moon, the first of the two albums. As Elverum explains in a recent interview with Prefixmag, these two albums "could work as a double album", and are "very closely linked", but there doesn't seem to be a concrete connection. This second album is entitled Ocean Roar, and it is self-released by Elverum, under his own label P.W. Elverum and Sun. There have been two songs released so far from the album: (an excerpt of) one entitled "Pale Light", and the other is the title track, which sees Elverum following his inclination to truly envelope the listener, while experimenting with a backdrop which is, while still musical, doused in darkness, a sensible melody in his own vocals, and phantasmal layers of vocals from a female cohort. In the same interview with Prefixmag, he said that he still records everything without a computer in his studio, and that these two new releases were recorded on a sixteen track tape machine. People will call it what they will, purist, or antiquated - we think it's just dedication to an art form.

Recommended Tracks: track #2 "Ocean Roar", track #7 "I Walked Home Beholding", track #6 "Engel Der Luft"

Lianne La Havas: New Peak at CMJ

Let's face it, we really are ecstatic about Lianne right now. She's currently touring on her lovely debut Is Your Love Big Enough, with several European dates in October and American dates with John Legend in November. The New York Times sang her praises in their Playlist column, commenting on her "innate sense of confidence that makes even her bitter songs somehow reassuring". Read the blurb here. The Telegraph's write up on her discusses how the record has "more than enough grit here to make a pearl", read the article here. Now she finds herself on the cusp of the top 50 at CMJ, moving up to #51. Recommend this new artist to one of your DJs this week.

Going for Adds - Ry Cooder

Ry Cooder's Election Special is a wake up call for the 2012 US Election. Produced by himself, this album is politically charged, from the ode to Mitt Romney's dog "Mutt Romney Blues" to "Kool-Aid", a song for "all the many Zimmerman's" of the world. Where as his prior releases have him dabbling in genres such as mariachi and celtic music, Election Special presents Cooder revisiting his blues roots. "Take Your Hands Off It" (co-written by son Joachim who plays drums on the album) and "Kool-Aid" group a classic blues sounds with big, slightly phased drums & "The Wall Street Part of Town" & "Guantanamo" could be mistaken for Spoon were it not for Cooder's iconic baritone. Cooder recently spoke with The Guardian about the album's political content. When asked why the songs on this album diverge from those classic 1960's political protest songs, Cooder said "I don't know how to do that really." So instead, Cooder sticks with what he knows on this album: pure blues.

Recommended Tracks: #3 "The Wall Street Part of Town", #9 "Take Your Hands Off It",  #7 "Kool-Aid", #1 "Mutt Romney Blues"

Onuinu Music Video "Happy Home"

Gearing up for a West Coast/Southwest/Midwest tour with Starf*cker, as well as the release of his debut album, Onuinu's music is truly about to hit the dance floor. His new music video for "Happy Home", directed by Andrew Sloan, shows Dorian Duvall (the man behind Onuinu) on a mission to connect dots he's created in order to transcend space and time. Duvall's "disco-hop" flavor correlates perfectly with the out-of-this-world vibe that the visuals provide. The video is presented by Vice's new music channel Noisey. Here's a link to the video for "Happy Home", the last track on his forthcoming debut album Mirror Gazer.

New Track off Mount Eerie's "Ocean Roar" - Digital Servicing Coming Soon

One of Mount Eerie's biggest assets is that the project's sound is always evolving. No two albums in his catalog sound the same, though there are always traces of sounds from what has been created and released previously. Prefix has recently debuted the title track from Mount Eerie's new album Ocean Roar, the second of two releases in 2012. In this song, Phil Elverum, the man behind Mount Eerie, follows his inclination to truly envelope the listener, while experimenting with an obscure backdrop, a sensible melody in his own vocals, and phantasmal layers of vocals from a female cohort. Hear the title track for yourself here

New Music from Onuinu - Digital Servicing Only

With Mirror Gazer due out at the end of September, we thought it'd only be fair to make another single from the hotly anticipated album available. This time, we're servicing the closing track from the album, "Happy Home". The track's swirling synths and dance beat will sound familiar to those who checked out "Ice Palace", but on "Happy Home" Dorian Duvall (aka Onuinu) underlines the disco undertones prevalent on the other tracks that make up his debut record. The burpy synth line and roller rink-ready melody will be enough to keep you satisfied until Mirror Gazer goes for adds in late September. Time Magazine called Onuinu a "...Band You Don't Know (But Should)". Get familiar by downloading "Happy Home" right now.

Lianne La Havas on La Blogotheque: A Take Away Show

Lianne La Havas' debut record Is Your Love Big Enough? went for adds last week. Her record takes alt-soul and inflects it with the ethereal folk of Feist or Cat Power. La Blogotheque witnessed this firsthand during a taping of A Take Away Show they did with Lianne late last year. Performing "No Room For Doubt", she wanders through Place du Tertre in Paris amongst the bustle of the town square, strumming and singing, "this comfort, this charm, the smile hidden behind the sadness." She's surrounded by Parisians but her voice and demeanor give you the impression that, in her head, she's all alone. Is Your Love Big Enough? will be going for chart debuts next week. The Flaming Lips at StePhestColbchella '012

This past weekend The Flaming Lips joined Grizzly Bear, Santigold, and a pirate costume-wearing Stephen Colbert aboard a former WWII aircraft carrier for the first ever Stephest Colbchella. Segments of their performance will air this Thursday on The Colbert Reportcheck local listings for times. The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends continues its reign in the top 20 at CMJ. Going For Adds: Lianne La Havas' "Is Your Love Big Enough?"

Lianne La Havas is a London based artist whose Jamaican-Greek upbringing is as unique as her sound. Taking the alternative soul of India.Arie and Corinne Bailey Rae and enhancing it with the smoky indie-folk pop of Feist, she was invited by BBC's Later...with Jools Holland to perform her song "Age" last year. It was there where she won over another artist who was also performing on the show, Bon Iver. “As soon as we saw her play it was so refreshing; somebody who could play their instrument, somebody who could use their voice, but in their own way. She is just fantastic,” said Justin Vernon who then invited Lianne to open for him on a set of midwest-US dates. LA Times has heralded her debut Is Your Love Big Enough? as "sublime", stating "repeated listenings only prove how strong and artful this collection is." Websites and publications like Fader, NPREsquire (UK), Flaunt, and Q have also taken note. As Nylon put it, Lianne La Havas is "Most Likely To: Reinforce that truly talented musicians do still exist".

The Barr Brothers - #1 on Hype Machine

The Barr Brothers are still generating lots of hype even a year after the release of their self-titled album. Their intricate, inventive and unique style of playing is partly the reason for this second wave of attention, showcased earlier this year on Late Show w/ David Letterman where their performance involved items most commonly found in fishing tackle boxes! Just last week they grabbed the #1 spot on Hype Machine, making their song "Beggar In The Morning" one of the most blogged songs of the past week. Up next is a West Coast tour supporting Brandi Carlile, so make sure to catch the band's folky, ethereal sound when they come to your town!

Onuinu on Paste Magazine

Onuinu's original brand of "disco-hop" has perked the ears of Paste Magazine who included the artist on their "10 Oregon Bands That You Should Listen To Now" list. Single "Ice Palace" is a good example of his ability to mesh electronic, house, r&b, and more into one cohesive sound. The single debuted with many stations last week and almost debuted on the CMJ Top 200! "Onuinu will be a name to remember in the next couple of years" so be one of the first to chart it at CMJ.

The Flaming Lips to play StePhest Colbchella '012

Last week, Stephen Colbert announced on The Colbert Report that he will be hosting his very own music festival, August 10th in New York atop U.S. Intrepid, A WWII Aircraft carrier docked in the Hudson River. Catch the announcement and video here. Colbert boasted that the aptly named "StePhest Colbchella '012: RocktAugustFest" will be bigger and better than the likes of Bonarroo, Lollapalooza, and newly announced S.S. Coachella (also taking place on a boat!). With a lineup including The Flaming Lips, Grizzly Bear and Santigold, it is definitely a veritable contender.

The free tickets for the event have already been snagged but Flaming Lips fans can no doubt catch the set when it airs the week following the festival on The Colbert Report.

The record fell short of the top 10 this week at #11. Give it a spin and help one of the most unique records of the year move up on the charts before summer is over.

This week, radio gave two A man A plan A canal artists a big push - Infantree and The Daredevil Christopher Wright. Lianne La Havas Going for Adds 8/14 & NPR's First Listen

U.K. artist Lianne La Havas can now count NPR as one of her biggest fans, after her debut album Is Your Love Big Enough? was featured on First Listen! NPR notes that in today's music industry, it's not enough just to have a good voice - "it takes nuance and charisma to stand out; blaring pipes aren't enough." Luckily for La Havas, she does just that with her jazz-pop folk melodies and ever malleable voice, transitioning seamlessly through a number of different genres and sounds. It's this diversity that serves her well and "is the stuff of Best New Artist Grammys, which so often reward this kind of hyper-accessible entry point into a smart, sophisticated sound world." She's sure to win over music lovers, no matter what their taste, so make sure to check out her album when it arrives and make it an official add 8/13 & 8/14!

Can't wait till then? Listen to the entire album on NPR's First Listen here.

Praise For The Daredevil Christopher Wright

The second album from The Daredevil Christopher Wright has had many stations enamored with its incorporation of hymnal choral melodies, primal percussion, and nontraditional structures. Canadian website Southern Souls said "The Nature of Things is neither proud nor ashamed. Accidents happen." This is evident on the end of lead single "Divorce" as the music comes tumbling down after maintaining a sweet sway throughout the track. And for the group "this is something to celebrate as much as it is something to mourn." Spin the record this week and read the full review here.

Imaginary Cities Daytrotter Session - "Purple Heart" Video Premiere

Winnipeg group Imaginary Cities visited Daytrotter to record a 4-track session of songs off their album Temporary Resident. "The songs that the...group perform here are rainy day laments. They are odes to the unraveling of relationships - disintegrations that aren't too bitter or questionable - just ones that were seen coming from off on the horizon", says Daytrotter. To hear the session click here. The group also released the music video for their song "Purple Heart". The starry clip has a vintage quality to it and shows imagery of nature and space with cross-cuts of Marti and Rusty performing. Watch the airy video here.

Cut Chemist's "Litmus Test" Mix

The anticipation for the release of Cut Chemist's first studio album in 6 years continues to build. The DJ/producer has been kind enough to hold us over this past year by offering special nuggets like "The Soft Sell" mix which he created through the use of a loop pedal and one turntable. Now Cut Chemist has turned to his Soundcloud to offer "A mix of everything you thought you heard". He explains "there is a piece from every release I ever put out from 1992 to 2002 in this mix from a UCLA art student cd release, an underground rap compilation cassette, J5, Ozomatli, mix cds with Shadow, remixes, etc...its all in there". Catching Up With Graham

I had a lot of fun this past week with my friends Dave and Helen in town from the UK. A group of us went to the Tottenham Hotspur vs. LA Galaxy game last Tuesday. It was a blast going to see The Big Lebowski at the Hollywood Forever cemetery on Saturday night. Jeff Dowd, who "The Dude" was based on, was there to introduce the film. I'm happy that Dodgers are back in 1st place after sweeping the Giants in SF this weekend. I've already watched more of the Olympics than I did in 2008 and 2004. Still finding the time for music and drawing. Hoping to finish some new art projects soon.

Onuinu "Ice Palace" Video

Portland's Dorian Duvall aka Onuinu (pronounced: on you, in you), will be releasing his debut full-length album Mirror Gazer in September. We recently digitally serviced you "Ice Palace"  from the record and we've been getting great feedback so far.  For today, we give you the "Ice Palace" official music video.  In the video, there is quite a lot going on.  You can see girls wearing tiger heads, televisions being dropped into buckets of paint, rugs blowing in the wind, psychadelic overlays, fruit, and some gratuitous zebra shots.

Note: the video is NSFW

Going For Adds - Onuinu's "Ice Palace"

Onuinu's (pronounced "on you in you") Dorian Duvall is no stranger to music. The Cleveland-bred, Portland-based artist spent his childhood in church pews listening to his mother sing and play piano, and watching his grandparents perform, who in the 50's toured the country as a honky-tonk gospel act. It's no surprise then that Onuinu's transition into the world of music making was seamless, “a lot of the people I was hanging out with were getting into house music and making dance beats. It was really easy to pick up on that and start making my own.” After recording a few songs to be released exclusively on cassette tape by the Portland based label Apes Tapes, Onuinu now returns with his debut album Mirror Gazer, set to be released September 11th.

Drawing inspiration from everything from old school hip hop to even some heavy metal, the resulting tracks are an interesting mix of laid back sound perfect for summer days. Onuinu's beats act as a backbone to subsequent layers of gauzy melodies, teeming synths, and swirling sounds. For now you can listen to the track "Ice Palace" and get your fill by reading an article by Willamette Week, which recently named Onuinu one of the Best New Bands of 2012.

The Daredevil Christopher Wright is Radio K's Weekly Release Spotlight

Radio K recently praised The Daredevil Christopher Wright's newest album, The Nature of Things, commending the band for songs that are stripped down and simple, but deceivingly so. Upon further inspection, the tracks on The Nature of Things "turn into deeper and deeper pools of wisdom of what it truly means to be alive in the 21st century." This wisdom is complimented by full harmonies, complex arrangements, and sweet sounds, reminding us of "a simpler time amongst a chaotic and stimulus inflated world." This is the reason that Radio K chose The Daredevil Christopher Wright for its "Weekly Release Spotlight Feature". You can read the full review here.

Infantree's "Skinny Bones Jones" Featured as KCRW's Top Tune

Infantree have been enjoying considerable attention following the release of their sophomore album, Hero's Dose, out on Vapor Records, and for good reason. Their "moody tunes" are "driven by three-part harmonies", making them hard to resist.  They recently performed on Conan, will be opening up for Los Lobos and Neil Young & Crazy Horse this fall, and on top of all that, their track "Skinny Bones Jones" was a Top Tune on KCRW this week! Click here to listen, and make sure to catch Infantree on tour later this summer. The album has moved up on the CMJ Top 200 each of the past two weeks. We'd love for you to keep giving this a push at your station.

Catching Up With Graham

Vinyl lovers rejoice: this weekend another new record store opened up in Los Angeles called Mount Analog. The shop is also the US headquarters of British label Finders Keepers and B-Music. I highly recommend checking it out when you're in the neighborhood. Plenty of burgers and carne asada have been getting cooked up on the grill lately, and I'm still seeing plenty of music and baseball. Last week I got a foul ball for the first time.

New Music From Onuinu - Digital Servicing Only

After recently completing a tour with YACHT, Onuinu (pronounced "On you in you") is ready to release his debut album Mirror Gazer this fall. The Portland-based artist speaks deftly about his sound which at its core is a hodgepodge of electronic, hip-hop, and house. The gauzy mix all started with bedroom experiments on samplers and 8-track recorders. The tracks then found themselves on a cassette only release on Portland label Apes Tapes. After much local buzz, Onuinu took to the studio where he recorded part of the record at The Auditorium - home to The Dandy Warhols. The resulting album, Mirror Gazer, draws listeners into a world of beat driven songs, surrounded by synth swirls and dawn-tinged melodies that fit perfectly with late summer car rides and days by the pool.

These days Onuinu's Dorian Duvall is spending less time playing to imaginary bedroom audiences, and more time touring, effectively expanding his fanbase. He's been on tour with Tycho for the past few weeks and is playing festivals in Seattle and Portland. He was recently named one of the Best New Bands of 2012 by Willamette Week (check out the article here), and will go on tour later this fall with Starf*cker, no doubt winning over audiences with his coy smile and self described "disco-hop" sounds.

The official release date for Mirror Gazer is set for September 11th, but in the meantine, get to know Onuinu a little better with this Decoder Magazine interview, and get your digital download of "Ice Palace" to hold you over.

Mystery Jets Reach Top 50 At CMJ

Mystery Jets reached a new peak at #50 on the CMJ charts this week with their newest release, Radlands. With breezy tunes such as "Greatest Hits" and "Hale Bop" (performed live for Bands In Transit!) you'll be skipping through the rest of summer. All Things Go gave a recap of their show last month which they said "hit all the right notes". Check out the review and pictures from the show here.

Let us know if you would like a clean version of the single "Greatest Hits". Let's get Mystery Jets to a new peak next week!

The Endangered Picking Up Spins

The Endangered have been on the charts lately, especially with stations like KWVA, WSHC, and WSIA. Some stations haven't been able to pin the group's sound, which the quartet may in fact prefer. Afterall, the intention on forming the group was to transcend genre barriers and embrace all the music they loved that was being crowded out by the current popular musical lexicon. For those of you in and around Los Angeles, The Endangered will be playing a free show at Dragonfly in Hollywood, July 15th. It should be a great show, catch the details here!

Going for Adds: The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends

The Flaming Lips have released separate collaborative EPs with the likes of Neon Indian, Lightning Bolt, Prefuse 73, and Yoko Ono, and a cover album of Dark Side of the Moon since their last studio album Embryonic in 2009. The culmination of tracks from the EPs and other collaborations is The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends. The limited edition, vinyl-only album was put out on Record Store Day and sold out instantly. The Flaming Lips also pressed "blood vinyls" of the collaborative record. Only ten copies exist and include samples of blood from several of the artists involvedWayne Coyne announced the limited number of copies will be available for $2,500 each.

Due to overwhelming demand, the highly anticipated project is now being released digitally as well as on CD, and features a yet-unreleased track with Aaron Behrens of Ghostland Observatory

Also featured on the album are Ke$ha, Biz Markie, Bon Iver, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Tame Impala, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Nick Cave, Erykah Badu and more.

The Heady Fwends album has received positive reviews from Lips fans as well as critics and magazines. Pitchfork has written a lengthy review of the album, stating that "The Flaming Lips can still win you over the same way they did 20 years ago, with a sweet, sad melody and simple, affecting sentiment." You can read the Pitchfork review of the album here

We digitally serviced the record to you last week, and it is going for adds today and tomorrow.

Revisit Cut Chemist's "Outro [Revisited]" - Check Out The New "Outro Dub" Video

Cut Chemist is hard at work putting the finishing touches on his upcoming 2012 album. Not long ago, we serviced you the first single "Outro [Revisited]" along with the b-side "Outro Dub".  To hold you over until the record is done, head over to his Soundcloud to check out some special mixes including The Soft Sell (a live mix using only 45s), Disco Is Dead, and Hip Hop Lives. All three are available as a free download!

We also highly recommend you check out the new "Outro Dub" video that Cut Chemist posted online here.

Now-Again Records recently highlighted the NPR article on Japanese Jazz musician Minoru Muraoka. The short post directs you to the feature where Muraoka's psychedelic shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) Jazz pieces of the late 60s / early 70s are analyzed. It also includes a (slightly) shorter edit by Cut Chemist of the 9-minute piece "The Positive & The Negative". Grab a free download of the song here.

Keep spinning "Outro [Revisited]" and "Outro Dub" as we anticipate the full-length later this year.

Catching Up With Graham

It's been a great start to the summer season. Los Angeles has a new champion with the Kings winning the Stanley Cup this year. It was a pleasure cheering on their excellent young team. The Dodgers have been fading due to a bunch of injuries, but there's still plenty of time to turn things around. I've been seeing some solid shows, including sets from Mystery Jets, The Little Ones, Infantree, Beachwood Sparks, and The Endangered. I also got the chance to see a great documentary on the artist Rodriguez called Searching For Sugar Man. Two weekends ago I was able to get out of L.A. for a fun trip up to San Francisco. I managed to fit in the SF MOMA, Mission Burritos, Aquarius and Amoeba, City Lights, and a bunch of baseball. Here are Susie and I after watching the A's walk-off win against the Giants.

New Music From The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends

It's no secret that The Flaming Lips have been doing a lot of collaborating lately. Separate vinyl only EPs with Neon Indian, Lightning Bolt, Prefuse 73, and Yoko Ono have been keeping the band busy since the release of Embryonic in 2009.

On Record Store Day, April 21, 2012, The Flaming Lips released Heady Fwends, a unique double-LP that became the most desireable Record Store Day title. In addition to the tracks included the previously released EPs, Heady Fwends also features collaborations with Bon Iver, Nick Cave, Tame Impala, Erykah Badu, Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, and more.

Due to popular demand, The Flaming Lips And Heady Fwends was released digitally and on CD this week. We're thrilled to be sending this to your station.

You can watch them perform said track on Conan later tonight! Check your local listings!

Caveman: Old Friend IFC Premiere

Just yesterday, a new video for Caveman's "Old Friend" went online on IFC.com. The video features the song "Old Friend" fading in and out throughout the 8-minute video, featuring a few band members, and the voice of Peter Sarsgaard. The opening of the video is filmed to mimic something of a television horror series of the late '50s and early '60s and includes all the classic Hitchcockian elements -- old houses, a staircase, people in wigs, and even a couple blonde women. This unique imagining of "Old Friend" compliments the song's tone and ambience, so much that it would make "Rod Serling feel warm all over".

Check it out here.

The Daredevil Christopher Wright Going For Adds

The Daredevil Christopher Wright, from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, is made up of brothers Jon and Jason Sunde, along with their friend Jesse Edgington. The band creates a mixture of instruments, vocals, and storytelling similar to other bands from the indie scene in their home town such as Bon Iver, Peter Wolf Crier, and Megafaun. For the band's sophomore album, The Nature of Things, they wrote songs "to try to confine the arrangements to elements that the three...could perform". Their classical voice training and pleasing, sometimes unexpected harmonies are evident throughout the album in pieces such as “Church” and “Ames, IA”. The album was recorded by Patrick Stolley, founding engineer for the music blog Daytrotter, and is filled with experimental structures and glowing yet dreary melodies and chords.

We digitally serviced the album's first single, "Divorce" a few weeks ago, which premiered on Paste Magazine. KCMP will be featuring the track as "The Current Song of The Day" this Wednesday. Start with that track and see where the album takes you. As is explained in the Paste feature, the Eau Claire trio's "album reflects a true simplicity, one that would be daunting to try and tackle, yet [they] do it with ease".

Mystery Jets have released their new video for the track "Someone Purer" off Radlands. Director Jem Goulding captures the band playing in the middle of the desert -- surroundings the band became familiar with while recording the album in an old wooden house in Austin, Texas. "The song has a desperate theme to it, but essentially is about seeing the beauty in things and being saved by faith, whatever that means to you,” explains singer Blaine Harrison about the track. Watch the video here. While in the UK, the band performed a couple songs on the side of a road for site Bands in Transit. Watch it here.

Infantree Going For Adds

Infantree, the Los Angeles bred quartet is back with their sophomore album, Hero's Dose. Released by Neil Young's label, Vapor Records, the album was produced by Niko Bolas and recorded at the legendary Sunset Sound Studios. Influences such as Nirvana and My Morning Jacket are clear on the band's more electric numbers. However, the band’s haunting three part harmonies, Alex Vojdani's classical guitar training, and the band's love of folk give the songs a more dark and hypnotic tone reminiscent of Fleet Foxes. The lead single, "Fibber", bridges the two sounds together with its eerie harmonies, jabbing organ, and soulful rhythm.

The band was recently invited back to perform on Conan on Thursday, June 28th to celebrate the release of Hero's Dose. The band is giving stations an early special opportunity before the album is released to the public to add and play the record. The record is going for adds today. Show your support for Infantree by making it an official Add this week.

The video was shot in an old movie theater in Oxford and featured fans as extras wearing silver masks in a theater watching a film of Gaz and a group of completely silver dancers. The masked theatergoers watch and tap their feet in unison, in this dystopian video. You can watch the video here.

New Music From Infantree

They also just recently announced tour dates opening up for Neil Young & Crazy Horse. The band is giving stations a special opportunity to spin the album before it is released to the public on June 26. Show your support for Infantree by making it an official add this week.

Going For Adds: Mystery Jets & The Endangered

Last week you should have received the self-titled debut EP from The Endangered and Radlands by Mystery Jets. The lead single off Radlands, "Greatest Hits", is the perfect example of the band's newly formed sound that was conceived in "a big old wooden house on the banks of the Colorado river" in Austin, TX. The track starts with open acoustic guitar strums and a jovial bounce, resembling the pairing of Of Montreal meets T. Rex. The album stears away from the band's synth-glam past and trades it for country chords, collective chants, and a Springsteen spirit. A clean version of "Greatest Hits" was digitally serviced to you on 6/1 and also included in the download of the album last Thursday.

RIYL: Band of Horses, Super Furry Animals, Syd Barrett, Beta Band

Recommended tracks: #5 "Greatest Hits", #2 "You Had Me At Hello", #3 "Someone Purer", #7 "The Nothing"

FCC WARNING: #1 "Radlands" and #5 "Greatest Hits"

The Endangered's first EP showcases the bandʼs range of influences from Rock to Vintage Soul and Jazz in its five tracks. After meeting at CalArts, the members formed to write songs for other people but eventually found themselves wanting to keep the songs to form a group. The EP was produced by Steven Miller who is most known for his work with Jack Johnson and Dave Matthews Band. The group's unique, cross-genre artistry is going for adds today!

Mount Eerie features: Tiny Mix Tapes & Huffington Post

In the past few weeks, Mount Eerie's newest album Clear Moon has been reviewed by NPR, Consequence of Sound, and was lauded as "Best New Music" on Pitchfork.

Mount Eerie was recently featured in a Huffington Post article focusing on bands that choose to live and work in solitary locales. Phil Elverum (a.k.a. Mount Eerie) is featured alongside Bon Iver and Bowerbirds, who all record in their secluded home towns, which adds a lot to their unique sound. You can read the whole article here.

In a review from Tiny Mix Tapes, Clear Moon is thoroughly analyzed. "Two tracks here, 'the Place Lives' and 'the Place I Live,' work brilliantly together to demonstrate the sheer dynamism and malleability of this new sonic space." The article goes on to examine Phil Elverum's sound, lyrics, and recording style. If you're feeling brave, then take on the article in its entirety over here.

Coming Soon: Infantree's "Hero's Dose"

The new album from Los Angeles based Infantree will be landing with you this week. Hero's Dose was recorded in the legendary Sunset Sound Studios and reflects the band's Nirvana/My Morning Jacket sound with a Danger Mouse production style. The single "Fibber" has already been digitally serviced to you and you can expect the album this week.

New Music From Mystery Jets

Radlands, the newest album from British band Mystery Jets, was not recorded in London, but in "a big old wooden house on the banks of the Colorado river," according to band member Blaine Harrison. "Our first three albums were entirely conceived and recorded in London so going out to Austin felt like the furthest place from everything we knew." Influences from their newfound surroundings are noticeable on the new record with the shedding of their synth-pop tastes for a more organic sound. The first single, "Greatest Hits", proves this with its opening acoustic guitar strums and jovial bounce that resembles Of Montreal meets T. Rex. The album was co-produced by Mystery Jets and Dan Carey (Hot Chip, Franz Ferdinand, Emiliana Torrini). Recommended tracks for the album are "Radlands" and "Greatest Hits." As a digital download bonus, a 12th track will be added as the clean version of "Greatest Hits" which was digitally serviced last week. The band will be on tour with Keane starting June 12th.

NPR and Consequence of Sound Review Mount Eerie

NPR's First Listen was streaming Mount Eerie's new album Clear Moon, which generated a lot of recognition, but is no longer allowing the free listen. The audio feature is no longer available, but the review of the album is still on the website here. "Clear Moon is an immersive, sprawling album that finds common ground in folk, ominous chamber music, electronics and, again, ambient metal tonalities" NPR states. In an in-depth analysis of the tonal backgrounds as well as the lyrics, NPR says that Mount Eerie's album has been found to take listeners to "a lovely sort of darkness that seems to ponder big questions."

Similar to NPR's review, Consequence of Sound attempts to question the meaning behind the lyrics and music of Mount Eerie in Clear Moon. Mount Eerie has always brought poetry into his songs that question the simplest of meanings in life. The general feeling is that "Elverum’s music is visual, the sound of a person falling backward into an abyss, reaching up at the night sky as the ground beneath swallows them whole." Consequence of Sound recommends the tracks "Through the Trees Pt. 2", “The Place I Live”, “Lone Bell”, and “Yawning Sky." The review can be read in full here.

June 6, 2012

New Music From The Endangered

The Endangered EP is the first from Los Angeles’ The Endangered. This five track EP showcases the band’s range of influences from Rock to Vintage Soul and Jazz. The band’s guitarist Nick Block and drummer Gene Coye met while attending California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), and soon found bassist Frank Abraham and singer Maiya Sykes to start writing songs for other artists. According to guitarist Block, “we'd established a unique sound based on the eclectic mix of all our personal influences and realized it made more sense to depart from the concept of selling our recordings for other artists to cover, and embrace the idea of making a true band out of the relationship the four of us developed as writers.” The EP was produced by Steven Miller who is most known for his work with Jack Johnson and Dave Matthews Band.

Mount Eerie's "Clear Moon" Going for Adds This Week

After the release of 2009's Wind's Poem, Phil Elverum (aka Mount Eerie) returns with Clear Moon, the first of two albums slated to be released this year. Elverum, the man behind The Microphones and Mount Eerie, recently took an extended break from touring in order to record the albums. The songs that appear on Clear Moon reflect the quiet life in and around the small northwestern town of Anacortes, Washington. In a recent Pitchfork interview Elverum states that "the songs and the ideas came from a more slowed-down attention to this particular place, this town, walking from my house to the studio and back every day." Read the interview here. Elverum established a studio called "The Unknown", in a de-sanctified church in Anacortes where he recorded the album. The tracks embrace the region's environment by carrying a misty haze throughout the 11-track piece. The church's tones permeate through the album as synthesizers weave through Elevrum's quiet guitars, sampled drums, and thunderous guitar.

Clear Moon was recently called Best New Music by Pitchfork who said the album "makes a vast, cool sanctuary of itself and quietly beckons you in...it feels like a collection of secrets Elverum has cupped in his palm to pour directly, and privately, into your ear alone.'" You can read the full Pitchfork review here. Clear Moon is going for ADDS today and tomorrow.

Gaz Coombes Interview with Q Magazine

Gaz Coombes recently spoke with Q magazine about splitting up with his former band, Supergrass, and the steps he had taken to get started with his first solo project, Here Come The Bombs. In the interview he explains how the project offered him an opportunity to create "something that felt rooted in 2012 and not be influenced as much by Bowie, The Who and other music that I was into." "I was more into soundtracks and mixing that with more contemporary sounds. I love the vibe of the old and the new. Mixing old analogue synths with drum programming," adds Coombes. You can read the entire interview (and also watch the video for "Hot Fruit") here. The record certainly has a contemporary sound, drawing comparisons to groups like Radiohead and Hot Chip. They call the record "a masterful collection of indie pop, electro, and soul songs that low and coalesce, crossing genres on almost every track." The review successfully identifies various musical influences incorporated into the album from the building, retro-soul anthem "Say You," to the soaring pop tune "Hummingbird," and the driving rock of "Don't Cry." Mxdwn.com goes as far as calling the new album a "tour de force of musical composition." Read the full Imaginary Cities  review here

New Music from Infantree - Digital Servicing Only

Infantree, the Los Angeles bred quartet is back with their sophomore release, Hero's Dose. We first serviced their debut album, Would Work, back in 2010. Now they return after their performances at Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, Dave Matthew's Caravan, and Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit. The album was produced by Niko Bolas (Neil Young, Warren Zevon, Secret Sisters) and was recorded at the legendary Sunset Sound Studios. Influences such as Nirvana and My Morning Jacket are clear on the band's more electric numbers. However, the bands three part harmonies, Alex Vojdani's classical guitar training, and the band's love of folk are also heard throughout the album's 12 tracks. The lead single, "Fibber" is now available as a digital download.

The band was recently invited back to perform on Conan after their performance last year. They will be performing on Conan on Thursday, June 28th to celebrate the release of Hero's Dose. Infantree will be on tour throughout the summer. Check the section below for more tour information.

The music video takes a behind-the-scenes look at Dr. John's three weekend residency at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, where he performed with guests including Blind Boys of Alabama, Ivan Neville, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Irma Thomas. Watch the video here.

After making a surprise guest appearance with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band this past New Orleans Jazz Fest, Dr. John will be on tour across the US and Europe. Check our tour page for more information.

Ramona Falls' on eMusic Daily Download

"Brevony," the lead single from Ramona Falls' prophet, was recently featured on eMusic Daily Download receiving 4.5 stars. According to eMusic, "Prophet filters a revolving door of instrument-swapping sidemen through restless arrangements and a cracked prism of indie pop hooks." They continue by stating that Brent Knopf "made it abundantly clear that it's full speed ahead for his one-time side project Ramona Falls." We are excited to see Ramona Falls continue at full speed as they tour and gain radio airplay through the summer.

Life continues to be full of musical and sporting adventures. I had some inspiring music meetings last week, making plans for the coming year. I made it up to KXLU with Ramona Falls for a guest DJ set and on air interview, and I also caught their set at The Echo the following night. I've seen some more great Dodger games, and I keep getting sucked into the NBA and NHL playoffs, following the Thunder, Clippers, and Kings.

Joey Ramone Going for Adds 5/14 & 5/15

…ya know? is the new 15-song album comprised of never-before-heard songs written and sung by legendary artist Joey Ramone. This collection of songs were drawn from a cache of demos and unreleased recordings that Ramone cut over the course of the last 15 years of his life, assembled by his brother Mickey Leigh. Most tracks carry the same raw, intense, vibrant sound and anthemic hooks The Ramones became known for. Others give insight to a more introspective Ramone that showcase a maturing songwriter. The album features contributions from a legendary cast of friends and collaborators including Joan Jett, former Ramones drummer Richie Ramone, and members of The Plasmatics, The Smithereens, Patti Smith Group, and Cheap Trick.

New Music from The Daredevil Christoper Wright - Digital Only - Going for adds 5/7 & 5/8

"Divorce", the first single from The Daredevil Christopher Wright's upcoming full-length, recently premiered on Paste. As is explained in the Paste feature, the Eau Claire trio's second album takes a turn from their debut, and "Divorce" is a perfect representation of that. The band's Jon Sunde stated that "with The Nature of Things, we made an intentional effort to focus and tighten the writing." This is brilliantly clear on "Divorce," a song that is simple in structure but whose instrumentation offers multiple complex layers.

New Music from The Daredevil Christopher Wright

The Daredevil Christopher Wright, a trio from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, consisting of brothers Jon and Jason Sunde, and friend Jesse Edgington, is releasing their second full length album, The Nature of Things next month. The first single, "Divorce," is available digitally below and was featured on Paste a few weeks ago. For their first full-length, In Deference to a Broken Back, the band used members of the local Eau Claire music scene (whose alumni include Bon Iver, Peter Wolf Crier, and Megafaun) to make songs with large instrumentation. On their new record, the band used a completely different approach and wrote songs "to try to confine the arrangements to elements that the three...could perform." The album was recorded by Patrick Stolley, the founding engineer for music blog Daytrotter, and is filled with experimental structures and glowing melodies and chords. Check out the track below and consider it for adds 5/7 & 5/8.

After four full-length albums and three EPs, Knopf decided to part ways with the band to focus on his solo project. “I’m less worried now about being made fun of, than I was before. I can now say things I believe in," says Knopf. You've already heard tracks "Sqworm," "Spore," and "Brevony" which have been featured on Pitchfork and Stereogum. I went out to both Friday and Saturday's Dodgers vs Nationals games this weekend. Friday I got to see an Ethier HR and a Kershaw Win. On Saturday the Nationals pitched Stephen Strasburg and brought up their highly touted prospect Bryce Harper for his MLB debut. In dramatic fashion the Dodgers scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th to send it into extra innings, and Matt Kemp won the game with a walk off HR in the bottom of the 10th. The Dodgers swept the series and are now tied for the best record in baseball. Here's a pitcure of Bryce Harper in his first MLB at bat.

New Music From Carolina Choclate Drops

The Carolina Chocolate Drops received critical acclaim with their Grammy-winning 2010 album, Genuine Negro Jig, which reached #1 on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart. Now they have returned with 2012's Leaving Eden, and have been touring North America in support all this spring. On this release, founding members Dom Flemons and Rhiannon Giddens have added multi-instrumentalist Hubby Jenkins and cellist Leyla McCalla to fill out the album and live shows. The album is clearly rooted in bluegrass, but builds on the group's unique, modern interpretation of the genre by incorporating hip-hop, soul, and traditional African-American music.

Recommended Tracks: #3 "Ruby, Are You Mad At Your Man?" #5 "Country Girl," #11 "Po' Black Sheep," #7 "Leaving Eden"

FCC Warning: #10 "West End Blues"

Imaginary Cities Going for Adds 4/23 & 4/24

Temporary Resident, the full-length from Winnipeg natives Imaginary Cities, is going for adds this week. The record has already received a lot of praise from the Canadian press including a nomination for the 2011 Polaris Prize, which led to an opportunity to open for The Pixies late last year. The group crafts indie-pop songs which range from the driving and soaring like that of Band of Horses or Temper Trap mixed with the down-tempo, introspective songs of early Metric. The band recently performed an acoustic version of "Say You" which you can watch here. Filter Magazine called the performance a "solid showcase of the duo's vocal compatability, soulful piano and lyrical strength." The band will be hitting the road starting in May, including a stop at Lollapalooza in Chicago. Consider the album for your top adds 4/23 & 4/24!

I just did back-to-back weekends of Coachella and Record Store Day. So much music consumption and appreciation! I made it to 9 different record stores here in L.A. on Saturday. New Single from Ramona Falls - Digital Servicing Only

Ramona Falls are set to release prophet, their sophomore album, on May 1st through Barsuk. Brent Knopf, the creative force behind Ramona Falls, is an original member of Portland's Menomena. After four full-length albums and three EPs, Knopf decided to part ways with the band to focus on his solo project. “I’m less worried now about being made fun of, than I was before. I can now say things I believe in," says Knopf. You've already heard tracks "Sqworm" and "Spore," now lead single "Brevony" is being made available. Check out a feature Pitchfork did on the track here. In Ramona Falls you'll hear dark, chordal elements paired with the "meticulous attention to sonic and compositional details" that Menomena was known for - says Pitchfork. "Brevony" showcases this with it's layered keys, haunting textures, and stomping riffs. prophet will be digitally serviced next week and going for adds 4/30 & 5/1.

Going For Adds 4/16 & 4/17: Gaz Coombes, George Sarah, & Cut Chemist

Gaz Coombes' debut album Here Come the Bombs is going for adds this week. The album arrives two years after the demise of Supergrass and was hugely influenced by the film scores of John Carpenter & John Barry. Dr. John's "Locked Down": Going for Adds 4/9 & 4/10

The new album by Dr. John has many stations talking about him this week! Not only is it the first release from the influential artist on Nonesuch, but his first album produced by Black Key Dan Auerbach. The living legend takes his staple New Orleans blues sound and filters it through the sound of The Black Keys' reimagining of American roots music. John's unique, soulful growl is now matched with the autumn tones of Auerbach & the raw production the Keys have always been known for. “He pushed and pulled me in some ways that made something different happen,” says Dr. John in a recent interview he did with the New York Times (which you can read here). The result is 10 R&B infused "voodoo" blues rock gems. As Pitchfork put it in their recent review, "The Black Key not only respects Dr. John's southern-fried eccentricities but amplifies them."

New Music From Dr. John - Going for ADDS 4/9 & 4/10

Press has been surrounding the musical legend Dr. John and his new release, Locked Down. The album was produced by The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach after their unforgettable 2011 Bonnaroo performance.  Locked Down carries Dr. John's tradition of jumping and mixing genres with his Tom Waits meets Captain Beefheart southern, soul drenched growl. On the record, Auerbach takes the American roots music that The Black Keys have reinterpreted and championed and applies it to the living legend. Throughout the album you'll recognize the soulful, bouncing back up melodies, tight drums, and autumn toned guitar & vocals The Black Keys have become known for. As Pitchfork put it in their recent review, "The Black Key not only respects Dr. John's southern-fried eccentricities but amplifies them."

The two came together to perform "Revolution" last night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The track "Big Shot" was recently featured as NPR's "Song of the Day" and NPR's Morning Edition spoke to both artists about their collaboration.

The much talked about album will be going for adds next week!

Recommended Tracks: 2, 3, 1, 7, 6

Going For Adds: New Music From We Are Augustines, Ramona Falls, and Gaz Coombes

With the school year nearing it's end, A man A plan A canal is making sure you get all the best new music before many of you sign off for the summer. We Are Augustines have followed up the success of their debut album, Rise Ye Sunken Ships, with a radio exclusive EP called Rock the Vote. The three unreleased songs on the EP are an acoustic version of album track "Book of James," a cover of Damian Jurado's "Ohio," and another never before heard song.

Ramona Falls' (ex-Menomena) new sampler has many stations excited for their forthcoming release. The two tracks, "Spore" and "Sqworm," are very much indicative of the whimsical yet dark experimental pop we have to expect from the band's sophomore release, prophet.

Gaz Coombes' single, "Hot Fruit," reminds Supergrass fans of what made the band so great while taking on some of the UK's and France's best exports like Radiohead and AIR.

All three releases are going for adds today and tomorrow!

Björk's "Hollow" video on All Songs Considered

Björk's latest project, Biophillia, has incorporated apps, newly created instruments, and more to explore the relationship between technology and nature. In her new music video for "Hollow," Björk continues her journey by commissioning biomedical animator Drew Berry to show molecular structures on a submicroscopic level. Björk's haunting vocals and percussive organ serve as a backdrop to the visual simulations of cells and DNA strands bending to form life.

Catching Up With Graham

After going through a phase of organizing and weeding out some of my record collection, I've now been spending more time adding to it. I've been picking up some inexpensive, but excellent vinyl at thrift stores, estate sales, and flea markets. There have been some great parties lately as well. Birthday parties, potluck parties, and even a magnetic poetry party. I went as "Truth" and "forever". Last week we had our Dodger Season Ticket Draft where we divide up all of our tickets for the season. Here I am putting the stitching on the baseball cupcakes. All of us Dodger fans are glad to have a new ownership team coming in. I'm definitely feeling the optimism of spring.

New Music from Ramona Falls

Brent Knopf is a founding member of Portland based Menomena. After four full-length albums and three EPs, Knopf decided to part ways with the band to focus on his solo project, Ramona Falls. “I’m less worried now about being made fun of, than I was before. I can now say things I believe in," says Knopf. Still, Pitchfork points out that Ramona Falls matches Menomena "in terms of both sound and quality, paying meticulous attention to sonic and compositional details." In Ramona Falls, you'll hear the dreaminess and experimentation Menomena is known for, except it'll some times be paired with dark, chordal elements. prophet will be released on Barsuk on May 1st. Pitchfork has already showcased one of the songs on the sampler, "Spore," which you can find here. For now, enjoy these two songs off the forthcoming record & consider them for your adds this Monday and Tuesday (4/2 & 4/3).

Penderecki and Greenwood: Four-Star Album Review on Consequence of Sound

The new collaborative album from Krzysztof Penderecki / Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead) recently received a four-star review from Consequence of Sound. The album boasts two original compositions by Greenwood which were written in response to the two Penderecki pieces that are featured which date back to the early 60's. Consequence of Sound calls the record "one of the most ambitious albums of the year so far," saying it "stands as a testament to [Greenwood's] own compositional dexterity, Penderecki’s legacy, and the pairing of old and new, chaos and creation." NPR's Bob Boilen spoke to 20-year-old Max Weisel who plays some of the unconventional instruments found in the Biophila live show. In the video, which you can watch here, Max explains the science behind the tesla coil used in the show and how it's able to translate patterns to become an instrument and create melodies. He also shows how they've utilized Abelton to make the iPad serve as a drum machine. Björk is currently in the middle of the second leg of her sold-out New York Biophilia residency which ends March 2nd.

New Music From Imaginary Cities - Going For Adds

This week, we're excited to be going for adds on music from Winnipeg's Imaginary Cities. Sonically, the music sounds similar to Stars and Metric but with the driving sensibilities of Blondie and the soaring melodies you'd normally hear from Nina Simone. After their debut album, Temporary Resident, received a longlisted nomination for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize, they were invited to open for The Pixies late last year. The group is recording a new album and will be announcing some midwest tour dates soon. Check out the EP and consider it for your adds this week!

Caveman "Getting Started" on Stereogum & Daytrotter's Best of 2011

The debut from Caveman continues receiving accolades for it's combination of shoegazy guitars, intricate percussion, and lushly-layered melodies. The album has been compared to artists like The Fleet Foxes, Dirty Projectors, & Animal Collective. Before making their Los Angeles debut, the group spoke with Stereogum at Echo Park's Origami Vinyl about their creative chemistry and what's up ahead for them - watch it here. Just a couple weeks ago, Daytrotter included the band's rendition of "Thankful/Decide" in their top 20 of 2011 - listen here.

NME Behind The Scenes: We Are Augustines' "Chapel Song' Music Video

We Are Augustines are in the UK, playing shows through February. NME went behind the scenes of the filming for their music video "Chapel Song". Watch it here. Catching Up With Graham

I went to Six Flags Magic Mountain this weekend for a birthday celebration. It was my first roller coaster adventure since I was 17. We packed in lots Thrill Rides and continued the party that evening with coconut cream pie. Last week I was there to see the Clippers blow out the Thunder and All Star Blake Griffin throw down a MONSTER dunk. That weekend before I had a relaxing getaway up in Ojai, CA. Here's a view from the catus garden up on Meditation Mount.

New Music From Imaginary Cities

Winnipeg's Imaginary Cities is Rusty Matyas (ex-The Waking Eyes, The Weakerthans' collaborator) and vocalist Marti Sarbit. The group crafts indie-pop songs which range from the driving and soaring to gloomy and introspective; all similar to that of their musical peers (Metric, Stars) but with the smoky haze of a Nina Simone song. After their debut album, Temporary Resident, received a longlisted nomination for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize, they were invited to open for The Pixies late last year. The group is recording a new album but we're so excited to work with them, we're making a couple tracks from their heralded debut album and an exclusive, bonus track available now.

The Barr Brothers are climbing up the CMJ charts again with their self-titled debut. The album broke the top 100 this week after falling off last December. KCRW made their song "Give The Devil Back His Heart" their "Top Tune" yesterday calling the album "a wide array of folk music from delicate melodies to growling delta blues." Check it out here. Thanks to station's like for CHRW, CKDU, KFAI, KZSC, WBWC, WXCU, and WSYC for debuting the solo effort from The Weakerthan's frontman John K. Samson. New Music From Yael Meyer - "Fire" Remixes - Digital Servicing Only

Yael Meyer's newest album Everything Will Be Alright has already received praise from publications like Spin Magazine and The Wall Street Journal. Now she's making her way down to her native country of Chile where she'll be joining AmApAc artist Björk, Arctic Monkeys, TV on the Radio, and more for this year's Lollapalooza in April. Before that, she's releasing an EP with remixes from various artists for her single "Fire." The first remix is from the Colombian/Argentinian duo Lulacruza, who have recently made a "visual album" with Vincent Moon, videographer of La Blogotheque's Take Away Shows. They bring their style of "Shamanic electronica" (Rolling Stone) to Yael's "Fire," in a version with South American percussion and deep, wompy bass. Entricut offers a remix that brings a beat and synth-line that sounds akin to Ratatat's "Nostrand" while Ladyjunk's remix could easily fit on the Drive soundtrack. Computo compliments the single's energy on his "Moombhaton Remix," complete with high-pitched dub laser-synths. Full tracklisting is available below. This EP is not going for adds but if you give it a spin, chart is as Everything Will Be Alright.

As we mentioned above, Cloud Control will be visiting London to play a show as part of the 2012 NME Awards Shows. People are starting to notice their debut album stateside which has inspired more than a few glowing reviews. Tiny Mix Tapes said Bliss Release is "a complex mixture of mystery, wonder, darkness, and straight-up weirdness sometimes." Check out the review in The Owl Mag, which includes a video of Cloud Control at Splendour in the Grass in their native Australia.  During their performance of "There's Nothing In The Water We Can't Fight", a crowd of listeners are inspired to storm up and down the hill near the stage in what The Owl Mag says "will be a Splendour highlight moment of all time."

John K. Samson Going For Adds - 1/16 & 1/17

Provincial, John K. Samson’s first solo release began with a simple idea: to explore four different roads in Manitoba, the Canadian province where Samson lives. “They're the places I kept going back to.” Samson talked to relatives, friends and strangers; he visited archives, a tuberculosis sanatorium-turned-RV park, a forgotten cemetery. For a video glimpse of Provincial’s prairie roadmap, click here. Brooklyn Vegan premiered the lead single off the album, "When I Write My Master's Thesis," earlier this month & NPR chose it for their Song Of The Day on Friday. The album sits where Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska, Sun Kil Moon’s Ghosts Of The Great Highway, & Mountain GoatsTallahassee all intersect. Check the record out and listen for yourself.

New Music From John K. Samson - Digital Servicing Only

John Samson’s lyrics move me with their detail and empathy. He has an ability to explain feelings we’ve all had but couldn’t verbalize. His songs are beautiful, brutal, honest and comforting, all at the same time.”—Craig Finn, The Hold Steady

Since 1997, John K. Samson has written four acclaimed albums with The Weakerthans. The band's most recent studio release Reunion Tour garnered praise from an assortment of publications including Paste Magazine, who said, "If such a prize existed, it would be the leading candidate for this year's Punk Pulitzer."

Provincial, Samson’s first solo release began with a simple idea: to explore four different roads in Manitoba, the Canadian province where Samson lives. “They're the places I kept going back to.” Samson talked to relatives, friends and strangers; he visited archives, a tuberculosis sanatorium-turned-RV park, a forgotten cemetery. For a video glimpse of Provincial’s prairie roadmap, click here.

The result is this collection of evocative songs, an album that fits beside Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska, Sun Kil Moon’s Ghosts Of The Great Highway, Mountain GoatsTallahassee. While the teenage craving of “Cruise Night” recalls the Cars, “Stop Error” invokes Bach; for “When I Write my Master’s Thesis,” Samson’s inspiration was all jukebox serendipity—Bob Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece,” sailing out from the corner of a Yukon dive-bar. Provincial is a record full of fierce, tuneful, vivid stories.

The Black Keys - Going for #1

The Black Keys had a very busy December in 2011. After playing Saturday Night Live for the second time that year - they debuted on the CMJ charts at #7 with their new album El Camino. The album was heralded as a top album of 2011 by many sites and publications including Time Magazine, who called it "an 11-song exercise in garage rock" w/ "the perfect blend of unpolished snarl and soulful croon." The group just made the cover of Rolling Stone this week & is now looking for chart debuts to regain the #1 spot on the CMJ Top 200. If your station has been enjoying the record over the break, show your support on the charts this week!

The Jigsaw Seen Takes Us Into 2012

Now that 2012 is in full swing, it's the perfect time to delve into the second half of The Jigsaw Seen's Winterland. The record offers the right sentiment for the winter blues such as the soulful-psychedelia of "Dreams of Spring" & The Zombies-esque ballad "First Day of The New Year." Warm up with these tracks along with "Christmas Behind Me" & "Winterland's Gone" as we push along into spring.

The Barr Brothers on Late Show with David Letterman & NPR's World Cafe

The new band from Montreal that we introduced to you late last summer continues to grow and find new listeners into the new year. The Barr Brothers have been holding steady on the CMJ charts for 11 weeks now and touring relentlessly since the release of their self-titled debut album. Thanks to the support of college stations like yourselves, the band received an invitation to perform on Late Show with David Letterman last week, watch the performance here. They also recently performed a small set on NPR's World Cafe who called their debut "a powerful and moving folk record" that "combines delicate harp arrangements with a rock 'n' roll sensibility and richly interwoven instrumentation." To check out their performance, click here. Remind everyone who first played The Barr Brothers by giving them some spins this week.
